While running the following script to catch my Java program exit code ,why it is always returning zero, though the Java program is running

My shell code

Start application ()
{
rc="0"
Java -Xms256m -Xmx1024m myjava &
rc="${?}"

}

    use && instead of & for the next command to wait for java command to complete it's process
