Detect if external link server is running, and if not, redirect to internal page
I'm building a simple site in Wordpress that will have links to login pages of a different external site. When each link is clicked, I want to be able to detect whether or not that external site is up and running. (Maybe the power is out or they are doing maintenance or whatever other reason the server may not be running.) If it's not, I want to automatically redirect back to another Wordpress page stating that the server is down and try again later, or some message like that. Is there some javascript code or something I can use to accomplish this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
