Sorting not working in ng-table in ionic framework

I am new to ionic and angular and trying to show a data in tabular form with filter, sorting and paging functionality in the ionic application.
I am using ng-table after importing below module.
import { Ng2TableModule } from 'ng2-table/ng2-table';
Below is the html from the file where I want to show the grid.
<ion-content padding>
<h3 style="color:399F8B;"> Manage :: Configuration Page</h3>
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-4">
<input *ngIf="config.filtering" placeholder="Filter all columns" [ngTableFiltering]="config.filtering" class="form-control" (tableChanged)="onChangeTable(config)" />
</div>
</div>
<br>
<div>
<ng-table [rows]="rows" [columns]="columns" [config]="config">
</ng-table>
</div>
<pagination *ngIf="config.paging" class="pagination-sm" [(ngModel)]="page" [totalItems]="length" [itemsPerPage]="itemsPerPage" [maxSize]="maxSize" [boundaryLinks]="true" [rotate]="false" (pageChanged)="onChangeTable(config, $event)" (numPages)="numPages = $event">
</pagination>
<pre *ngIf="config.paging" class="card card-block card-header">Page: {{page}} / {{numPages}}</pre>
</ion-content>
And following is the config and table definition code from the corresponding TypeScript file.
public config: any = {
paging: true,
sorting: { this.columns },
filtering: { filterString: '' },
className: ['table-striped', 'table-bordered']
};
public columns: Array<any> = [
{ title: 'Id', name: 'ID', sort: 'asc' },
{ title: 'Name', name: 'NAME' },
{title:'Age', name:'AGE'},
{title:'Comment', name:'COMMENT'},
{title:'Address', name:'ADDRESS'}
];
As a result of the existing code and html, I am able to bind records in the table with paging at the bottom and filter text box above the table. But I am not able to sort the records on clicking the column header.
As most of the code or html I searched through online is targeting only AngularJS but not Ionic framework so I am unable to integrate them as it is.
Please let me know what I am missing, if any further code is needed I'll add that
typescript ionic-framework angular-datatables
