REST API replies on localhost but not machine name or IP

I have a ASP.Net WebAPI2 REST API running on a Windows 2012 R2 server, on IIS 8.
When I run calls against on the server using localhost, everything works. However, if I try to call the API using the machine name or the IP I get the error:
ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED.
I can however browse the webfront of the API using machine name/IP address.
So in short:
http://localhost/MY_API -> browsing works
http://MACHINE_NAME_OR_IP/MY_API -> browsing works
http://localhost/MY_API/api/items -> API call works
http://MACHINE_NAME_OR_IP/MY_API/api/items -> API call fails with ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED
All calls are made from the server hosting the API.
ASP.Net 4.5 is installed on IIS and I've also checked that the firewall is open for http.
I'm not sure where to start with this, so grateful for all help.
