Non-aligned text in custom environment using tabular

MWE:

NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}

ProvidesClass{custom}[Custom class]

setlength{textwidth}{6.5in}

setlength{textheight}{8in}



LoadClass{article}



newenvironment{custom}{begin{center} begin{tabular}{l} 

end{tabular} end{center}} %

Output:

Whereas, this is my desired output:

You're apparently missing some braces: newenvironment{custom}{begin{center}begin{tabular}{l}}{end{tabular}end{center}}. Please add a minimal example; anyway, if you do xyzbegin{center}...end{center}, you can't expect that xyz is vertically aligned with the text being centered.

you haven't provided a usable example but unrelated to the tabular, note your textwidth and textheight settings will do nothing as they will be re-set by article class which you load later.
